A cross-border network for utilization and protection of wild and cultivated plant diversity of East Macedonia and South-West Bulgaria (Traditional knowledge for sustainability)

The project strategy has three main pillars:Inventory: The border area is rich in plant resources used by the local communities for centuries. Due to various reasons the knowledge about this is scarce and scattered. Therefore, the project was start with a survey of local practices for plant uses. A data base was initiated and maintained after the end of the project.Training: A 3-day training was organized for the target groups and the seminar was used to discuss the approaches how to further study, utilize and protect the local practices for sustainable use of plant resources. A Manual for studying local practices in the CBC area was prepared.Promotion: The utilization of local knowledge for sustainable local growth is a relatively new topic and needs promotion so that the messages can reach wide audience. Several channels were used: printed leaflets and booklets, internet site of the project, a cross-border fest, FAM tour for journalists and a press conference.
