Comendador Juan de Távora Secondary School is located on the outskirts of Puertollano, an industrial town in the Spanish midlands. There, the unemployment rate is very high and the social and economic level is low. There are 410 pupils registered at this school this academic year. 70% of pupils come from the schools nearby, and 30% come from the villages in Alcudia Valley, such as Brazatortas, Mestanza and Solana del Pino, among others. This fact is what defines the school’s character, since it makes us have an enriching diversity. Our school has held the first European Section among the schools in the city. Six years after its implementation, we have the aim to enlarge and strengthen the European Section. The Government of Castilla-La Mancha has established a B2 Certificate in a foreign language as a requirement for a teacher to be able to give lessons as part of the European Section at Secondary and Bachillerato (further education) levels. Our project comprises three main points: 1. It develops the objective “enlargement of the European Section”, and it is directed to the school’s teachers who have expressed their will to become members of the Section, but lack the required language qualifications. The activities that are intended to be carried out are English Language Structured Courses that allow them to acquire the level B2 according to MCERL. These activities are suitable for three of our teachers: a P.E. teacher, an Art teacher and a Physics and Chemistry teacher. 2. The consolidation of two of the teachers who are already members of the European Section and need to nurture their methodologies in CLIL in order to be able to motivate their pupils and develop their educative role in the best possible condition. These teachers belong to the Biology and Geology Department and the History and Geography Department, respectively. They are to undertake Structured Courses on Methodology that will help them develop linguistic strategies in their subjects. 3. Nurture the linguistic competence of the Foreign Language of the teachers, an English teacher and the Assistant Head of Studies, who undertake the functions of assessment and methodological coordination in the European Section. These teachers require courses on “training teachers” and English language at C1-C2 in MCERL´s terms. These three points converge in a final aim, which is to provide our pupils with the opportunity to fully develop their capabilities. The methodology on which we have relied is the analysis of our pupils’ needs, and, based on this, our teachers’ needs in terms of permanent education, in order to satisfy the formers’ needs. The results we expect to obtain are the improvement of our pupils’ language skills, the widening of the school’s educative offer, the inclusion of the European dimension in the school teachings, and the promotion of curricular innovation as well as the development of good practice. To fulfill all of this, we will implement eTwinning as a work tool, and a direct access link to this website will be shown in the school’s website main page. Moreover, a blog will be specifically created for the European Section, in which the materials for the DLN subjects, as well as links of interest and eTwinning information, will be uploaded. The teaching staff, the School Board and the Parents Association will be informed about the actions carried out in the project. We will also publish an article in the local and regional press about the project and its benefits for the whole of the school community. We have the strong desire that this project is the first of many more that help our pupils’ integration in Europe and provide them with the best academic opportunities.
