2nd Phase of the project: Water quality damage prevention and elaboration of remediation measures at Velikiy Bychkiv in Ukrainian-Hungarian Cooperation -– Starting Remediation (HUSKROUA/1101/057)

The project aims at protection of water quality and ecosystems of the Upper-Tisza Region, and improvement of quality of life of inhabitants concerned. Overall objectives include strengthening of good relationship between Hungary and Ukraine, and increase environmental sensitivity of the inhabitants of Zakarpatska Oblast by focusing on importance of remediating contaminated areas. The project aims to stop contaminant release from the tanks and reservoirs still filled with wastes and residues of the former wood processing activities, to start to clean-up groundwater at the most polluted part of the former Wood Chemical Combinate (LHK) site, to ensure cleaner drinking water supply for the neighbouring areas. Expected Results: The estimated results are: safe on-site storage of wastes and hazardous materials; decrease in the extent and concentration of pollution, especially decreasing TPH, PAH, BTEX and phenol content of groundwater by 50%; gaining experience in operating a remediation system.
