About Me

Vilnius University, one of the oldest and most prominent higher schools in the Central and East Europe, was established in 1579. Now the University has 23 core academic and other equivalent divisions – 12 Faculties, 2 Institutes with faculty rights, 5 research institutes, and 4 inter-faculty Study and research centres. 

One of the core aims of VU is to initiate and actively implement projects of value for development of the country and region, which would encourage effective co-operation with business sector and create favourable conditions and environment for innovations and entrepreneurship.

VU is co-founder of science and technology park “Saulėtekio slėnis”, also incubator for start-ups from life sciences sector. VU has an Office for Intellectual property management and commercialization, which is responsible for intellectual property management, technology transfer, establishment of start-ups and spin offs, licensing, infrastructure and services open access centres for business, collaboration with business, trainings of intellectual property management, entrepreneurship and research marketing and etc. 

VU has participated in various projects related to innovative actions and enhancement of entrepreneurial ecosystem such as: “Improving the placements and internships from academia to enterprises”; “Innovation, new ventures and entrepreneurship in social work teaching”; “Development of Innovative Business”; “Development of e-scientific electronic services and e-science gate”; “Open access to science and research; “TP-UNI – technology transfer development in Lithuanian research and study institutions”.

Vilnius University maintains close cooperation relations with other Lithuanian universities and also with universities, institutes, research centres, museums, public and business entities from Europe, Asia, America and other continents. The cooperation with business partners is pursued in various forms, such as the implementation of joint projects, contracted research works, provision of research services. During the last 5 years Vilnius University implemented more than 100 projects in cooperation with its business partners embracing such programmes High technologies and Industrial biotechnologies, Eureka, FP 6, FP 7, and other programmes the purpose of which is to promote applied research at universities to assisting business entities in addressing different problems that they encounter.

Since 2008, Vilnius university has established 19 start-up companies.
