Methane gas production from agroindustrial wastewaters in anaerobic fixed bed reactors

The aim of this project is to advance research and innovation in biogás (methane) production as a renewable energy from the treatment of agroindustrial wastewaters using anaerobic fixed-bed reactors. It will be used as carbon source wastwaters from many different industrial processes.

Fixed bed reactors will be fed with cassava wastewater, swine wastewater, domestic sewage, vinasse, dairy industry wastewater and some other effluents. The operation temperature will be ambient (31 ± °C). The bioreactors will operate in recirculation mode for 48 h to activate the CH4-producing sludge, after this period it will be switched to continuous mode and will be operated with different hydraulic retention time (HRT) until it reaches for each phase (each HRT) its steady-state operation based on a constant volumetric CH4-production rate within a 5-10% variation. The composition of biogas and soluble metabolites produced during hydrogen fermentation will be determined at designated time intervals.

We are seeking international partners to collaborate on this to support H2020 Calls
