T&L Loreto balbriggan
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Loreto Secondary School, Balbriggan has a vibrant Teaching and Learning group that developed as a result of participation in an initiative called Teaching and Learning for the 21st Century run by the Department of Education and Skills. This group is vibrant and has grown exponentially over six years. The group is made up of teachers who volunteer to take part in hour long meetings after school five times a year. The main focus of the group is teaching and learning and the sharing of ideas and strategies that can be used across the curriculum in our school. The Department of Education and Skills has now deemed these meetings as acceptable for formal CPD, a positive endorsement of the work of the group. During these meetings three areas that afforded some improvement in our school were identified. These centred around inclusion, (15% of our school population come from ethnic backgrounds) stress management (most of our students aspire to progress to third level education) and finally to look beyond the Irish education system to other European countries for ideas that demonstrate best practice in relation to teaching and learning. Therefore the aim of our project is to address the areas of concern as identified above. It is envisaged that participating teachers will develop skills and competencies that can be shared across all disciplines in the school. This sharing will empower all staff and students. The sharing of ideas from three different European courses will enhance the overall aim.It is hoped that attendance at these courses will support teachers to:-Develop strategies that allow all teachers to become more reflective in their practice and facilitate the development and execution of new methodologies. -Deliver classes to our students that will foster an open mind, tolerance, and acceptance of diversity.-Develop a skill set that will enable students and staff manage stress in a more controlled way and further support students to deal with stressful situations.-Embed creative thinking in our classes and across all school related activities.-Encourage more staff to attend the teaching and learning group, empowering them with innovative ideas and skills ultimately benefiting the entire school community
