Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Background of the project:We have had a two-year break in international school projects in Inari municipality. Before the break Ivalo Upper Secondary School, for example, has been involved in three different Comenius projects, many Individual Pupil Mobility projects and Job shadowing projects. Now it is time to activate this work in all schools in Inari municipality and to offer school education staff opportunities to participate in mobilities in different European Union countries. The new curricula for general education (primary and lower secondary and secondary level) highlight the importance of international contacts in teaching. The municipality school department finds it important to send teaching staff abroad. The questionnaire the school education staff answered gave us valuable information about their motivation to take part in courses abroad and their needs for further professional training. The results of the questionnaire have been used in filling in the application. Objectives of the project:By sending school education staff abroad to participate in different courses they will be offered an opportunity to create new contacts with other teachers around Europe. Their language skills will improve and they can broaden their horizons at the same time as they acquire more knowledge about ICT, pedagogical and didactic skills, and communication skills. Teachers can also convey their more positive attitude towards internationalization to their pupils and students. All this will make it easier to plan new KA2 projects, filling in applications and carrying out future projects.Participants and their profiles:We are applying grants for seven mobilities. The participants are either head teachers or teacher from different levels of education, they come from different age groups and their background is varied as well as their needs for further professional training. These needs were gathered through an online questionnaire aimed at all the school education staff in Inari municipality. Project activities:We will send seven people for a week or two weeks abroad. The target countries are Germany, Ireland, Malta and the United Kingdom. The course contents are varied: CLIL, the English language, school visits, networking in order to carry out future KA2 projects, how to make a good use of tablets in teaching German, school management and ICT skills.Project management:Inside Inari municipality we have decided that Ivalo Upper Secondary School and its head teacher and the teacher in charge of international affairs will take care of the practical project management. They compiled a questionnaire targeted to the whole school education staff in Inari municipality. The results of the questionnaire were used when filling in the application. Ivalo Upper Secondary school will be the coordinator of the practical project management and thus they will also fill in the final report with the help of the teachers and head teachers participating in courses. The head teacher of Ivalo Upper Secondary School will be in charge of the finances of the project. There will be a board of 3 – 4 people who will select the teachers for the mobilities. All the teachers can express their willingness and motivation to participate in the training sessions abroad. Those selected will be given help in each stage of the mobility: when choosing an appropriate course (Gateway –portal), enrolling, booking accommodation and travel tickets, completing preparatory assignments, and disseminating their experiences to the whole school education staff after their mobility. The results and impact envisaged:The language skills of the teaching staff involved in the mobilities will improve and their attitude towards internationalization will become even more positive. Their ICT and communication skills will improve. A successful mobility will improve a person’s self-esteem and give them courage to meet new challenges. It will also encourage schools to apply for grants to carry out international projects, help to build networks and get foreign partners. We also believe that after the mobility the members of the teaching staff will be more prepared to eg host an exchange student. Our aim is to make international training an everyday, annual activity among the school education staff in Inari municipality.
