Language training
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Clydagh National School is a very small, rural, isolated primary school on the shores of Lough Corrib in the west of Ireland. We are very proud of our school as a focal point in our community and a place where we nurture each individual child to achieve their full potential as they set out on the lifelong journey that is education. We believe that 'language is the light of the mind'. It exposes us to new cultures, new horizons and endless possibilities. French has been part of our language curriculum for over ten years and it's place in our future plans is secure. We are very priviledged in this respect. Our school has already shown a strong commitment to language teaching and the participant has studied the teaching of French when the MLPSI was in place in Ireland. Participating in a total immersion course will ensure the continued upskilling of the participant in an authentic cultural and language setting. We strongly believe that children should be exposed to a modern language as early as possible in order for Ireland to become a truly multilingual society. We want our school community to enthusiastically embrace learning and using new languages. We believe that this should be fostered at every stage of the education system and through lifelong learning. In terms of policy Ireland has been years behind our commitments under the Barcelona Agreement and the Lisbon Strategy. Although our school is small, we believe that we can help our country to catch up! We know that what we teach and learn here can have a far reaching impact. Our Mission Statement as a school includes the words of William Butler Yeats when he said that "education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire". The learning platform that is our little school will spark many fires!!
