Erasmus+ Project 2014-1-UK01-KA103-000378, undertaken and completed by The University of Manchester, is set within the context of the University's 2020 Strategy which includes a commitment 'to promote global awareness providing students with access to courses and activities that address global questions together with opportunities for studying, volunteering and working outside the UK'. The objectives of the Project were to facilitate the mobility of students in order to support their academic, personal and inter-cultural development, thereby enhancing their employability and capacity to contribute valuably to a global society. Similarly, staff mobility was intended to support skills development, alongside sharing and development of best practice. 368 student mobilities were undertaken through the Project, approximately two-thirds were academic mobilities to partner universities elsewhere within Europe and one-third traineeships undertaken in other Programme Countries. 19 mobilities were undertaken by staff, mostly for teaching. The majority of the student participants were undergraduate students which is the current institutional focus with respect to international mobility. 18% of mobilities were undertaken by students from disadvantaged backgrounds, with the University having ambitions to further widen participation. With respect to student mobility, the Project resulted in a significant and quantifiable enhancement of core competences with students reporting a very strong positive impact on their problem-solving skills, confidence and adaptability as well as the value that they place on different cultures, their ability to co-operate across cultures and their open-mindedness. Staff participants emphasised the networking and enhancement to job satisfaction resulting from participation alongside the long-term benefits for collaboration.
