The project “Establishing a Framework for conservation, evolution and promotion of Balkan Accordion Heritage in South-East Europe” is an important step in the direction of preserving Balkan regional accordion tradition which is running the danger of disintegration due to political history and recent political developments in the region. The goal of the project is to profile Balkan accordion tradition as one of the key European regional traditions in accordion musicThe project proposes to approach this goal through establishing a transnational network of accordionists from 8 target countries in the region in order to reinvigorate a shared transnational cultural space; through forming a Network orchestra that would serve as an Ambassador of Balkan accordion music; through developing an International Workshop on traditional Balkan music, singing and dance as well as through producing accordion concerts and setting up a Web portal for the purpose of publication and broadcasting of Balkan accordion music.The project will enable approx.100 accordionists, artists and pedagogues from the region to study and publicly present their work outside their country of origin; at least 120 Balkan accordion pieces will circulate through concerts and web portal publication and broadcasting to an audience of hundreds of thousands persons, not to say millions. But more importantly, through conservation, evolution and promotion of the Balkan Accordion Heritage, the project creates enormous long-term potential for transnational circulation of Balkan accordionists and accordion orchestras as well as Balkan accordion music, not only in the region or inside Europe, but globally. Finally, the project will bind into a network over 10.000 persons from a variety of language, religious and ethnic backgrounds, who share a common interest in accordion music. A musical style might function as another mode of collective identity through inter-cultural dialogue.
