We have noticed a decline in the motivation of our students over recent years and consequently a deterioration of their performance in foreign languages We also see a growing number of students who cannot participate in the foreign language activities offered by the school as a result of the poor economic situation of their families. Especially the children of immigrants often have more problems. Our efforts are aimed at increasing and retaining the motivation of the students when learning a foreign language. We are trying to maintain the achievements of our students at a high level. We want to reduce the number of students who have to repeat a year or even leave school because of their poor results. Furthermore we want to enable more and more students to make use of the educational and training opportunities all over Europe. We would like to achieve these aims through training programmes for our teachers both abroad and within the school, through the implementation of modern teaching methods, by including current issues and content and by the extension of our international activities. The head of the French department of our school and a colleague teaching English should initially take part in an Erasmus Programme. The experience and knowledge gained on the programme should be useful in the evaluation and development of our language skills. These experiences should provide an important contribution to the development of our school programme by focusing on the European dimension and by encouraging more cosmopolitan attitudes. In cooperation with schools abroad we want to establish active partnerships both among the students and the teachers, so that a motivational, long-term and self-confident approach within the European Community becomes a matter of course. This project should create the basic conditions through which we can achieve this aim in a sustainable manner, by reducing inequality and offering equal opportunities to all students, as well as providing wider choices for their professional careers.
