Construction of the II track in the wood terminal of Värtsilä Municipality’s industrial area
Start date: Jun 17, 2001, End date: Nov 29, 2001 PROJECT  FINISHED

The goal of the project was to construct the railway in the Värtsilä municipality’s industrial area mainly for the needs of freight forwarding in order to secure unhindered operation and development of the constantly increasing freight traffi c between Finland and Russia in Niirala. Th e construction of the railway from Russia to Finland was a logistic necessity for Finnish wood refi neries and forwarders that import raw timber, as the current railway was unable to suffi ciently serve the transport and storage needs of the companies. Achievements: In the project, an approximately 700-metre-long new industrial track was built in the Niirala industrial area owned by the municipality and sections of the old track were replaced with new ones. In addition, one track was replaced and lighting was increased in order to improve working conditions and safety in the area. The new track has ensured seamless operation of freight traffic in accordance with the original objective.
