ANALYSIS DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A TELEMEDICINE NETWORK FOR REMOTE REGIONS IN THE AEGEAN AND CYPRUS

The aim of this project is to design and develop telemedicine services targeting the needs of the people in the region, especially in cases involving emergency medical care. These services will be organised on the basis of modern health technologies. Specifically, the extension, installation and practical application of a telemedicine system will be carried out in the framework of the project, comprising of mobile medical devices, located always with the patient, and a base station located with the specialist medical doctor. The system has been developed and successfully applied on pilots in the context of Emergency-112 HC4027 1998-2000 & Ambulance HC1001 1996-1998 projects, financed by the European Community. The project will be implemented in cooperation with EMP Biomedicine Technology Workshop, which sponsored the above projects. Expected Results: The service to be developed will include tele-diagnosis, distance medical support and advice to remote medical assistance units (ambulances, rural health centres, country doctors etc) by specialist doctors based in a regional hospital or medical centre. Service provided will be based on a technology which will enable the gathering and transmission of crucial diagnostic biological signals (electrocardiograph, arterial pressure, oximetry, temperature) and the collection and transmission of a video signal or a series of patient images. The video signal and the pictures will provide specialist doctors a visual picture of the patient condition.
